half made page about food.
food
okay. im a vegetarian and i like my food. im not too sure
what this list is going to look like yet. but im gonna try and
make it good. obviously. i think some people miss out on some
amazing food. so this is my crusade to make people eat nicer
and better food. a lot of people ask me what i eat since i
dont eat meat. like meat is the only food substance or something.
i doubt this is a 'how to eat healthy' guide or anything. haha.
but it all tastes good.
cous cous - its superb. you never used to be able
to buy it anywhere but now you can. and its so easy to cook. add
boiling water and leave for five minutes. you cant go wrong. you
can buy packs with flavouring and stuff now. the best is by far
the mango and salsa stuff you can get from tescos. its so much
cheaper to buy a bag of straight cous cous and do it yourself
tho.
cheese - i love cheese. what can i say? its just
great. and there are so many cheeses. i get really annoyed with
people for buying cheap mild (means no flavour) cheddar because
its not real cheddar and its putting the real cheese makers out
of business. so buy good cheese people. my current
favourite cheese is either smoked applewood or montery jack
(its the texture and subtle flavour okay?). im a big mozerella
fan too. especially in pasta when its just starting to melt.
go easy on cheese tho. its not the healthiest thing in the world.
paneer - here is a cheese that deserves its own
seperate mention. its an indian cheese that is just amazing
in curries. some people put it straight in but if you cut it into
cubes and fry it with a little olive oil its superb. crunchy
and soft. next time you go to an indian restuarant see if they
have matar panner on the menu (with peas). youll thank me.
halumi - okay. this is another type of cheese and its
from cyprus.
i used to hate this stuff as i kid but very recently realised its gorgeous.
its really salty and youre supposed to fry it as well. people have told me
it tastes like bacon when its fried but i wouldnt know. just slice
it and fry it for about a minute. yum.
morning star streaky strips - talking about bacon
morning star make the nicest fake bacon you can buy. and its one
of the cheapest as well. it smells amazing and tastes great too.
i dont know what bacon tastes like but ive been told that this
tastes nicer (how bacon smells? i dont know). i dont really like
my food to look like meat really. it kinda puts me off. but then
theyre so tasty i just dont care. haha.
vegemite - while the world seems to be arguing
whether marmite is nice or nasty everyones missed the fact that
vegemite is far superior. always has been and always will. and it
was around long before marmite appeared. probably the best thing
to come out of australia. i love vegemite.
halva - nearly everyone i make try this stuff hates
it but im gonna tell you about it anyway. okay? i think its greek
but its one of those things you can only buy in health food shops.
yknow i dont even think its that healthy. oh well. its made from
sesame seeds and its kinda weird. it has a sticky crumbly texture
and its really sweet. its another one of those things you just have
to try once. sorry if you hate it. no not really. haha.
joosters - not strictly food but worth a mention
cos theyre the only gelatin free jelly beans you can get. theyre
also the juciest. and apple flavour as well.
i feel like i should mention some of the my favourite restuarants and
takeaways. theres little point cos most people reading this
wont be anywhere near any of them anyway. but oh well.
lets start in rugby with the chinese down the road that used to be called 'the sailing boat'.
this place does the best vegetarian fried rice around. its amazing.
although the best plain egg fried rice can be found at the 'new
sum ye' chinese on the corner of the arcadian in birmingham.
that place is superb. they even have the menu in chinese. its
that good. and the chinese at the bottom of our road in brighton does the
best range of vege dishes ive ever seen. chinese food you gotta love it. as for take away pizza
(the best kind of pizza)
the best place is 'pizza the action'
in rugby. go for extra cheese onion sweetcorn and pineapple and you
wont be disappointed. my favourite indian restuarant is probably 'bobbys' in
leicester. its 100% vegetarian and its always full of the local
indians (always a good sign). in birmingham
i think the 'punjab paradise' is the best. its situated on ladypool
road just opposite the 'royal' sweetshop. in selly oak id probably
go for the 'cafe eastern delight' or perhaps the 'dilshad' cos they do both do a damn good
matar paneer.
i know fast food is really bad but selly oak just got a 'subway' and its
great. its open till stupidly late and the vege max is amazing. and
if youre ever in brighton hunt down one of the 'grubbs' cos its the
best burger place ever. they do 100% vege burgers and the menu covers
a whole wall. i think my favourite was the tropical
(vege burger with pineapple banana and peanut sauce).
you know it makes sense. and if im going as far away as brighton i
may as well mention the 'radost fx' in prague. the best vegetarian
restuarant ive ever been to. best food and best atmosphere. its too cool.
theres a proper vege/vegan
restuarant in birmingham i as well.
its part of the friends of the earth hq which is just in
digbeth. its not far from town. its just on the other side of moor
street station. now im brighton i know all the vege restuarants there now. my favourite
is 'food for friends'. its quite expensive and you have to book but i just really like
the food and atmosphere. 'terre a terre' does amazing food but thats just too expensive.
for a cheap all you can eat vege indian extravaganza go to the 'bombay aloo'. the currys arnt
birmingham standard but for £3.50 all you can eat including about six different curries.. can
you go wrong? no. other than that i quite liked the 'bombay' if you can find it. good korma and
good cheese naan (i know its gross but shut up).
